When using a glass lamp chimney, there are 2 or 3 ways to soften the light coming from the light bulb, oil burner, or gas burner. Sandblasting, as opposed to using an acid wash or painted "frost" is a vastly superior method. Paint or acid places the actual finish on the inside (and outside) of the chimney making cleaning the chimney, especially in the case of a kerosene oil lamp, difficult or impossible. Also a sandblasted finish may be cleaned vigorously without scratching or otherwise marring the surface of the glass.
