Bridge arm lamps were popular during the Victorian times of the 1910's up to the 1940's. Overhead lighting was scarce and these were often placed beside a chair for a bright reading light. They are usually decorative so they served as a light in addition to making the room look elegant. You will find many bridge lamps in the Art Deco style.
